"I've been retired here in Cebu, twelve years already,
But not actually Cebu City. I moved to Mactan Island. Mactan is where the International Airport is that services the Cebu area. Mactan is the place to be. Some people call it Lapu Lapu, but Lapu Lapu is just one city on the island. The island itself is named Mactan. Lots of nice places to live on Mactan. Of course some are nicer than others. And what makes Mactan island so nice is: It's compact. We have everything you need within ten minutes of wherever you decide to pitch camp. Nowadays it easy to find fresh milk, pork and beans, Tabasco, Jack Daniels, Tostitos, and other essentials necessary in everyday life.
If you're thinkin about packing up and gettin the hell outta Dodge, Mactan is a good place to be. The Filipinos are a good bunch of folks, and if you treat 'em good, they'll treat you good. Find yourself a pretty lady, and settle down. Nobody's gonna bother you.
You can find a place a to rent, or if you Tie The Knot with a local, you can even buy a place....in her name. And just to be on the safe side with your new bride, buy it in her name and then get a twenty year lease on it... from her. Sign the lease papers at the same moment you sign the house closing. That's just a little protection, just in case your lovely partner decides your feet stink and wants to put you out. It can happen here, just like anywhere. So cover your backside. A good attorney to help you with those matters is Orpha Casul of Lapu Lapu city. Her cel number is 0917 322 2066. She's good, and she's affordable.
And if you're already hitched and want to bring your wife along, rent a house, or buy a condo. Foreigners are allowed to buy Condos. And here in Mactan there's no shortage of Condos.
Can you ride a motorbike? It's the best way to get around. Traffic here on Mactan Island can be thicker than honey in the Klondike. But with a little motorbike, you just whip around it. I'd say half the foreigners here have motorbikes. Take a look at the Honda Wave, 125cc. It's got some get up and go. And a new one will cost you about a grand. US dollars. The Suzuki is a decent bike also. And if you don't want a scooter, get a 200 CC Honda dirtbike. That's a nice bike for pot holes, and dirt roads. You might want a car also, for hauling groceries home, 0r toting the kids to school and back. We got cars here. I like Suzuki myself, when it comes to good and dependable automobiles. Kawasaki has a new 220cc model that is very very nice, for about 90,000 pesos.
If you want to come over and stick your toe in the water and check things out, I'd recommend Banana Moon. Banana Moon can put you up in a nice room with prices ranging from 600 pesos a night, for a bed and a fan, or twenty five thousand pesos a month for a nice room with a motorbike included. Banana Moon has some expertise in helping foreigners get settled in. They showed me the ropes. I rented a room there, and a motorbike, and got pointed in the right directions. Banana Moon is owned by the wife of an American guy who's been here almost 30 years. . He was one of the first four foreigners to retire here on Mactan. Heck, there must be several hundred expats now. Banana Moon can help turn you on to What's Available Where, in Mactan. Check out Banana Moon, , at http:/www.mactan.com Tell 'em Joe sent you. More About Mactan. We have a nice Mall here, the Gaisano Grand Mall. Located in Basak, the largest barangay in Mactan. (Barangay is the local word for town.) We also have a big hospital, Mactan Doctor's Hospital, also in Basak. Seven big nice modern grocery stores. Save More, Super Metro, and Gaisano are the biggest.
Public markets are scattered throughout the island where you can buy fresh vegetables, and fresh fish and pork. We got pleanty of banks here, and several of them also let you have a dollar account. There's even automatic tellers scattered everywhere. Wasn't like this twelve years ago, sonny. Oh, and don't come over with travelers checks. "what the hell is that?" Banks don't even want 'em. Nobody will cash them. I guess that's what makes 'em safe.
